This week, we have compiled five accounts where accessories save the outfit. But this time, instead of dressing up, we are dressing down.
9:00 PM Thursday You have been working for an amazing marketing company for the past year that attracted you for their amazing charities they create for the local children's hospital. Tonight, you and your vibrant, kind-hearted boss are attending a gala benefiting the children’s hospital. She knew that you would love the event and the opportunity to dress to the nines. Upon your arrival, you were immediately spotted and cornered by your ex boyfriend, who you have been successfully avoiding for the past two months. He explained that his company was making a large donation to the hospital, and it was just happenstance that he was here. For the past two hours, he has been following you around like a puppy. Even your boss took notice and tried to intervene. Yet somehow, all three of you are now awkwardly sitting at a dinner table together. You are desperately looking for an out. You fish out your phone from your purse and see...
SCENARIO 1 | MEETING CELEBRITY AT DIVE BAR
text message illuminates on your phone from your best friend Abbey. “Kacey! I cannot fully explain how this happened, but I am currently sitting across from Garth Brooks! If you make it here by 10pm, you can meet him too! We are at the dive bar next to our favorite pizza place. It is like three blocks from you… One stipulation, please try to dress down. He is trying to fly under the radar.”
You realize that your mouth is agape, and your boss is staring at you. You slowly push your phone across the table in her direction, trying to avoid contact with your clingy ex. She reads the message, looks up in your direction, and gives you a nod of approval. You slip out one of the side doors of the ballroom and frantically begin to text your friend. “I will be right there!” Suddenly, you realize you are still in a ball gown. You have moments to dress down this look, so you dart to your car before running to the bar.
What Would Jenny Do?
If you can cover the top of the dress to conceal that it is in fact a ball gown, you have made it into the final stretch. In this scenario, we wanted to showcase a "girl next door" look. So, we turned to a denim button down, a red bandana, repeated the red in the necklace and accented the red with a pop of turquoise color.
SCENARIO 2 | MEETING SPORTS
A text message illuminates on your phone reading, “Kacey, that super cute guy from the puppy training class is at the Jimmy Eat World concert, and he asked about you! I have an extra ticket because Alisson could not come. The opening act is still on, so just get here!” Another text pops up on your screen from your boss that reads, “I am not sure what message you just received, but this is the first time you smiled all night. If you need to go, go.”
You explain to the table that you are not feeling well and need to leave. You immediately respond to your friend, “I will be there in 20!” Then you look down at the ball gown you are wearing. Nothing about this screams, “Hey cute guy from my puppy training class, I am not high-strung at all.” So you dart to your car before running the to venue.
What Would Jenny Do? Again, conceal the shoulders of this dress, and you are essentially wearing a long black skirt. Now, make the look scream rock and roll with the loomed wrap necklace, thick leather cuff, and leather feather earrings. Last, pull that hair back and reapply the lipstick.
SCENARIO 3 | LOCAL CELEBRITY CHEF OPEN-FIRE COOK OFF
A text message illuminates on your phone reading, “Kacey! I am at this amazing open-flame, outdoor food event featuring some of the restaurants that you have been trying to turn into clients. The event itself is winding down, and we are all just starting to hangout. If you get here soon, you can just chill with these guys and win them over!”
You get your boss’s attention to show her the message. She is beaming, winks at you, and then announces to the table “Kacey, I am ready to go home. It seems that my little one is not doing to well. Can you drive me?” Now you have a way out!
This is fantastic! You have literally been trying to figure out an “in” with these restaurants for the past year! Except you look like you are coming from prom, and that is NOT going to fly at an upscale BBQ event. You run to your car hoping you can find something to dress down your look while responding to your friend “I will be there in 20!”
What Would Jenny Do? The white denim jacket gives this look a fun and approachable feel. We then layered her in turquoise necklaces to add texture and help conceal the sparkly neckline. We used a colorful bandana to tie her hair to the side. And lastly, added a gorgeous fringe backpack to help conceal the "I just came from a black tie affair" look.
SCENARIO 4 | BEST FRIEND MIXING UP TICKETS
A text message illuminates on your phone reading, “Hey… so, remember how I told you that we were going to a late-night showing of Wicked with the guy I just started dating? Um… it is not the Broadway play. He is a huge fan of street art, and there is a big conglomeration of street artists hosting a giant party called Wicked… but please still come with us!”
Great… this princess outfit will not jive well with spray paint. But, it IS a way out of this awkward situation, and none of the artists are your ex-boyfriend. You announce to the table that you are leaving and collect your belongings before your ex can say anything. You make a beeline for your car and now have whatever might be in your car to go from “pageant-ready” to “art show chic”.
What Would Jenny Do? For this scenario, we wanted to add color! So, we used a vibrant scarf, and tied it to wear as a vest in efforts to hide the top of the dress. Then we accented the scarf with a pop of light blue from the jasper necklace and earrings, and then stacked her arm with bracelets to add some texture.
SCENARIO 5 | YOUR SISTER JUST ELOPED
A text message illuminates on your phone “SISTER!!! So… Chase and I just eloped! We are in town, and it is now time to celebrate!”
This is great! It is a way out! You announce to the table “So, my sister just eloped, and I really need to be there for her!” Before your ex can even get a word out, you turn to him and say, “It is very nice of your company to make such a large donation.” Then you turn to your boss and explain, “I will see you tomorrow!” You make your escape, and as you are walking out, you realize that you have to dress this look down because it is your sister’s big day! So you make a pit stop at your car to make all attempts to dress down the look!
What Would Jenny Do? For this scenario, she needed to dress the outfit down, but still look elegant in celebration of her sister's wedding. So we went with a light-weight top, and layered her in pearls.
